BASC Director of Coaching Pete Fox was born in Southern California. He attended
Damien High School in La Verne, California where he earned varsity letters in Football,
Soccer and Baseball. His senior year he was selected “Spartan of the Year” for his
achievements as a senior athlete. Former national team members Rick Davis and Mike
Fox (Pete’s brother) were members on the Damien soccer team. Both Rick and Mike
played on the 1984 Olympic soccer team, U.S. National team and both played for the
New
York Cosmos in the North American Soccer League. (NASL) Rick Davis captained the
Olympic and National teams for many years.  During the summer of 1976, Damien’s
soccer team traveled to the east coast to participate in a Bi-Centennial Tournament in
Rhode Island. Damien was the only high school team represented in the tournament.
Other teams were all-star teams from Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
The Connecticut team was captained by Joe Morrone Jr. whose father, Joe Morrone, Sr.
coached at University of Connecticut. (UConn) Joe Morrone Jr. played with Rick Davis
on the US National Team.  Pete and Rick Davis were named to the Bi-Centennial All-
Tournament team. The All-Tournament team played a game against a local American
Soccer League (ASL) team.   In the 1977 Damien won the San Antonio League
championship, the first league championship in many years. That same year the team
lost in the CIF semi-final game 2-1.

During Pete’s senior year in high school he was selected to play on the Southern
California Interscholastic Federation All-star team. His coach was Cherif Zein, a
prominent youth soccer coach in Southern California. One of the highlights of the all-star
team was when they competed against a youth team from Germany coached by Berti
Vogts, former Borussia Monchengladbach and West German national team player. The
game was played at Camarillo High School.  One of the players on the German youth
team was Pierre Littbarski, who played for the West German National team. The day after
the game a photo of Pete and Littbarski was shown in a local newspaper. Littbarski has
managed many teams throughout the world and is currently coaching a J league team.

In 1977 Pete was recruited to play soccer at Cal State Fullerton by former U.S. National
Team coach Ralph Perez. Pete attended Cal State Fullerton and was a four year starter
as a sweeper, named captain his junior and senior years. Pete left school between his
junior and senior year, wishing to seek a chance to play professionally. He prepared to
travel to Italy, where he was scheduled to train with a local team in Bologna, Italy. The
Italian connection fell through and Pete ended up in
New Jersey living with Cosmos
player Rick Davis. Pete was fortunate to start attending Cosmos reserve training
sessions and eventually started attending first team sessions when the Cosmos needed
players. Pete has many memories of sitting on the Cosmos bench during games when
Giants Stadium was sold out with 76,000
people. One of the memories Pete shares is
when the Cosmos were training the day before the Argentinean National Team with
Diego Maradona. The Cosmos team had to move out to the natural grass field outside
the stadium (the stadium field was being painted). At the end of every Cosmos’ training
session the team played “Americans versus Foreigners”. Games at the end of training
sessions were always competitive and on this particular day, Pete received a pass from
Gary Etherington and scored. The goal drew a negative verbal response from sweeper
Carlos Alberto. (Brazilian National Team) The young Americans won that day.

After eight months in New Jersey, Pete returned to California and came to Bakersfield to
help with a coaching clinic. Pete ended up befriending soccer people from Bakersfield
and eventually moved to Bakersfield and worked part-time at Semi-tropic School on Hwy
46. Pete assisted Pepe Ortega at California State Bakersfield in the fall of 1980. Pete also
coached the soccer team at Wasco High School Tigers in 1980-81. In the spring of 1981,
Pete went back to Cal State Fullerton and completed his last year of eligibility and
completed his bachelor’s degree in physical education.

He began coaching soccer in 1977 as an
assistant soccer coach at Damien. He
continued to coach throughout his college days, working at soccer camps and clinics. In
1984 Pete coached at
Mission High School in San Luis Obispo. Pete was the first men’s
coach at
Bakersfield College in 1985. In 1986, Pete moved to Fullerton, becoming an
assistant coach at Cal State Fullerton. In 1988, Pete became a CAL-South Olympic
Development Program (ODP) coach and coached many years in the program. Pete also
was a staff coach for USYSA Region IV ODP.

Pete earned his United States Soccer Federation National “C” license in Florida, his
USSF National
“B” license at Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks and his USSF “A” license
at UC San Diego. Pete finished his Masters in Business Administration in 2007.
